Unfortunately for the animals in today’s film, the ‘70s were a bit more lax. I’m sure everyone is familiar with the disclaimer “No animals were harmed in the making of this picture.” It has appeared in the credits of practically every film released after 1989, when the American Human Association officially trademarked their seal of approval. This is doubly so if these animals are working under the Hollywood banner. If you’re a cow or pig, tough luck, but dogs, cats, dolphins, and other species seem to be in a league of their own in terms of deserving respect.

There are so many ways that it could be interpreted, and the themes are so generalized, that it’s difficult to know what the author is truly trying to say.Animals, usually when cute, often find themselves under the protection of mankind. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I’m not sure I understood the authors intent. Read as an allegory, it is so full of a mishmash of religious ideas, that it could be interpreted any number of ways based on the readers own spiritual beliefs. Taken as a simple story, it is an emotional tale of an intellectual and spiritual journey to find purpose in inspiring a younger generation, and delight in loving those who are unlovable.
